Summary
The Buyer position is responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and pricing scrap metal materials from businesses and industrial accounts. This role focuses on building supplier relationships, accurately grading materials, negotiating prices, and ensuring material quality and profitability while maintaining compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
Essential Job Functions
Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Purchase ferrous and/or non-ferrous scrap metals from suppliers and customers.
- Negotiate pricing based on market conditions and company margins.
- Build and maintain relationships with peddlers, contractors, and industrial accounts.
- Be in the know of local major construction demolition projects to salvage metals.
- Ensure purchased materials meet quality and specification requirements.
- Capable to accurately identify, sort, grade, and price scrap materials as needed.
- Monitor market trends and report pricing conditions to management.
- Maintain accurate purchase records, scale tickets, and documentation.
- Interact with the Operations Department concerning accurate grading based on quality of scrap metal delivered to the plant.
- Interact with scale operations to accurately input purchases across the scale.
- Coordinate with yard operations for unloading, sorting, and inventory control.
- Maintain a list of industrial and commercial accounts producing scrap metal and contact on a regular basis to buy material (includes contact via phone and site visits).
- Gather and maintain appropriate information about the local market for raw material concerning cost trends, availability of supply, and competitor information.
- Arrange economical transportation of material to the plant, ensure efficient handling of material (maintain strong communication and working relationship with transportation department and operations).
- Provide monthly reports including estimated inbound volume, type and grade of material, and price structure for material.

- Ability to identify, grade, and determine quality ferrous metals.
- Working knowledge of basic computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite.

- Very strong interpersonal skills that will lend to a strong sales acumen.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Dependable, flexible, and ability to work in a fast paced, changing environment.
- Organized and attention to detail is required
- Ability to multi-task with excellent time management skills.

- Walking: Frequent walking throughout the facility both indoors and outdoors and on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery.
Carrying/Pushing/Pulling: Infrequent carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects
- Bending: Occasional bending to grade material.
- Reaching: Frequent reaching with hands and arms.
- Specific vision includes close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Lift products and other objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights (up to and over 15 lbs. occasionally).
- Must be willing to work outside in the elements in order to grade materials.
- Physically able to participate in sessions, presentations, and meetings.

- Outside work in the Yard is where temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain) may be encountered.
- Work may take place in an industrial environment, with noise, dust and fumes.
- Noise level in the work environment can be moderate at times, hearing protection is provided by the company at all times.
Work Hours:
Hours of Operation – Monday thru Friday 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Schedule is subject to change with production and business needs.
